It could be argued that Derbyshire’s Peak District is one of the most suited areas in the UK for adventure sports. The roving countryside, beautiful woodland and wild peaks are perfect for activities including mountain biking, 4 x 4 off-roading, climbing and abseiling, target sports, watersports and much, much more.
A newly formed campaign group launched very recently, being the Peak District Adventure Sports Alliance. The group wants national park bosses to acknowledge adventure sports enthusiasts and states that climbers, mountain bikers, cavers and paddlers bring a vitality to the area, as well as economic benefit.
The group, which includes the British Mountaineering Council, fell-running representatives, outdoor education providers and canoe communities, also states that the Peak District is underfunded, pointing out the disparity between the Royal Opera House’s near £30m in subsidy and the national park authority, which receives just £8m per year in funding.
